The 5 Best Lure Types for Murray Cod

Check out a few of the photos from the cracker session we experienced over the weekend at Lake Windamere. This is a special place with the fishing being on another level compared to anywhere else you target yellas.

We fished hard across two and a half days, fished a range of spots and techniques. We did have some slow spells where it was hard to figure out where the fish were but we were also extremely lucky and got onto some cracking schools.

Mason took out the trip landing the most and the biggest fish, which was the result of persistence!

We landed 50 fish between 4 of us for the weekend, with some absolute crackers hitting the deck. Mason caught two fish at 61cm and 6 more above 58cm. Mitch landed a 60cm and so did Murray. Massive thanks to our newest SF member, Murray Stewart for spending the weekend with us and sharing his local knowledge on the dam. This helped us out so much and Mason will 100% agree as he spent Friday night picking his brain after catching only 1 fish for day one, before turning that around and landing 10 on the Saturday.

Goes to show that information and learning from others is the most important thing to success! You can have all the lures, but if you don’t use them correctly and in the right spots you still won’t catch fish.

Tips for Windy:

The lures that we found success on were:

  • ZX40’s in black or brown colours
  • Soft vibes (Transam & Kokoda soft vibe)
  • Soft plastics (yabby patterns and Gulps)

The more natural presentations worked best, as long as you can locate the fish, are you are fishing close to them. Colours didn’t really matter at all. The darker colours in the ZX40’s worked well. Mason caught a heap of fish on a pink soft vibe and the soft plastics were black in colour.

Finding fish was most important and using the correct technique. For more information on the techniques we used, the structure we fished and how we found the fish, check out the latest podcast which will be out tomorrow. The four of us sat down on Saturday night and discussed the trip and what worked for us.

Was an awesome trip! Hope you enjoy the photos, tips and the podcast, and comment below if you have any questions!
