Woke up this morning to the first frost of the year. Yep, that’s right the winter season is well and truly here. With frequent rains, foggy morning and cold days it’s time to change our style of fishing. This doesn’t mean the fish don’t bite, it means we need to change our fishing style slightly so that we still have success out on the water.
Over the next few months we will be sharing with you articles and tips on fishing in the winter months. With a lot of content revolving around how to have success with big winter natives. It’s a dream of many anglers to land that elusive metre cod – and winter is the perfect time to do it!
Fishing Updates
I have a few quick updates on fishing around the area at the moment:
Eucumbene River is still fishing well. If you are a Trout angler you will know that the first big rain before winter is the start of the Trout run. What happens is the monster browns from the lake move upstream to breed. This place becomes a fisherman’s paradise at this time of year. In saying that it’s usually shoulder to shoulder with other anglers, that’s how good the fishing is. So if you are keen for some big Trout on spin or fly make sure you head up there before the season closes on the June long weekend.
The natives have well and truly slowed down now but that’s only because all the small fish disappear. This means we now have the opportunity to find the big cod. Fishing from now through till closed season for cod (September 1st) will be hard work but the results will be cuddling size! The last few weeks have been a little disturbed in the rivers due to the rise and fall of water height. This was caused by the heavy down pours of rain that the south east of the country have been receiving. This rise in water can unsettle them for a few days, especially when you are trying to get your lure into the deep holes where the big fish are hiding. Depending on where you are fishing it can take anywhere from 5-10 days for the water to drop, settle and start to gain clarity again.
Even with this rain and dirty water it isn’t going to deter us over the next few weekends. Stay tuned on this column and Facebook to see how we go.

Water Run Off – Do fish feed after heavy rains?
It is a time of year when it’s easier to just sit at home over the weekend but if you scratching your head wondering how you’re going to get that big fish – now is the time to give it a crack.
