Over the last weekend I was lucky enough to test a few new lures while filming the new ‘Surface Fishing for Murray Cod – Small Creeks’ tutorial. The lures we were using were the all new Gobsmacked Crank‘n’Stein wake bait.
When I saw this lure swim through the water I was sold and knew it would be a perfect cod lolly. A few features that straightaway caught my eye where how reinforced this lure was. Being a three sectioned (double jointed) wake bait instead of having the standard single ring connection between sections, it has three interconnected rings. Making it incredibly strong and allows a wide snake like action when retrieved. It also has two connection points per joint, making it an extremely tough lure.
Also the guys at Gobsmacked have spared no expense when it comes to the terminal and finish. Murray Cod quality hooks and rings are as standard and a paint job that is second to none.
And lastly the advantage this wake bait has over traditional paddler style lures is that it dives just beneath the surface creating a more positive hook up rate, but best of all it still sits high enough to produce the cracking surface strike that we all love.
When a Murray Cod boofs a paddler style lure it is often pushed aside rather than being inhaled due to the force of the strike. Where the wake bait sits slightly under the water the lure gets taken in and you end up with a much higher hook up rate.
In all I would say if you are a serious cod angler you need one of these in your kit, you won’t be disappointed.
