I’ve spoken previously about Engaged Fishers within the Murray-Darling Basin focus group in articles and posts on Social Fishing. This group has been set up to build awareness and interest of recreational fishers in environmental flows.
This core group of highly engaged and well informed anglers provide advice to DPI Fisheries on how to better communicate the role and purpose of e-flows for fish outcomes. All anglers in the group have completed a survey and provided thoughts and ideas to fisheries on how to create a better link of information from water bodies and fisheries to the anglers.
The environmental flows are in place to benefit native fish and help with breeding and reproduction. On the other hand there are damaging effects of these flows like cold water pollution which is driving native fish away from large sections of rivers downstream of the water storages, black water events and also bank erosion.
The best news is we are moving forward into an exciting time where information about environmental flows, when they are happening and why they happen will become more readily available for anglers.
I would like to ask you all to share your opinion, thoughts or ideas on this matter. We know that anglers want more information but what do you think is the next step, should there be a website all about water releases and flows, maybe an app, forums or maybe videos explaining how everything works?
