Blowering Dam can be a tough place to fish at times but every now and then the fish switch on and that’s the case at the moment. With all the warm spring weather, the Golden Perch have well and truly switched on and are schooling up in solid numbers.
Best areas to fish:
There are two main areas that have produced for us over the past few weeks:
- Twiggy Trees
- Rocky Points
Both these areas hold good schools of Golden Perch and we have found that right on first and last light are the best bite periods. So make sure you fish the best looking spot right on dark (last hour of light).
The wall end of the dam has been producing some great fishing with large schools of fish sitting along plenty of rocky banks in the area. Up the top end of the dam towards Talbingo your better off fishing the twiggy trees in the backs of bays.
Best lures:
On the rocky points the best presentation is a lure that represents a yabby. I have been using the Berkley Crabby rigged on a 1/4oz jighead and the other stand out lure is the ZX40 in the Dark Knight colour. If you are fishing the rocky points or banks, make sure your lure stays in contact with the bottom and use the hop and drop technique.
In the twiggy trees I like to use curl and paddle tail soft plastics and also lipless crankbaits. Best technique is to just slow roll the lures down deep past the trees.
Keep an eye on the weather:
Something to note is that these fish can turn on and off very quickly and it’s usually all due to the water temperature and weather. Last week was very cold and the fish were slow and hard to catch but the weekend just gone, was warm and the fishing was brilliant! Today we have another cold and wet day but later on in the week the days will be warming up and the action will be hot again.
Make sure you plan a trip on a warm and sunny day as this will help bring the fish on the bite (especially in the afternoon).
If you are planning a trip to the dam in the next few weeks, hopefully these tips will help you find some fish. November every year is a great time to be fishing for Golden Perch in Blowering!
